Virtualisation
Modernising Legacy FSTDs with Future-Ready Architecture
Many lower-level FSTDs still depend on ageing computer systems that are difficult to maintain and increasingly prone to failure. SIM OPS’ Virtualisation Solution replaces outdated hardware with a modern, streamlined infrastructure without altering any simulation code, delivering a more reliable and sustainable device built to last.
A Smarter Way to Extend Your Simulators Life
Our solution virtualises the full simulator architecture and consolidates multiple legacy machines into a single high-performance environment, eliminating dependency on obsolete hardware and significantly reduces operating costs.
A typical SIM OPS virtualisation setup includes:
- One VMware server running all key components as independent virtual machines
- Virtualised host, system, and visual computers
- Standalone Instructor Operating Station (IOS) with control of the server
- Upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise (Windows 11 under evaluation)
- Real-time host executed in a virtual partition without modification
- Replacement of six or seven old PCs with two modern rack-mounted machines
- Reduced power consumption, typically around 65 percent lower
- QTG runs performed before and after the upgrade for validation
This provides a cleaner, more stable, and easier-to-maintain system that requires fewer physical components.
Preserving Your Original System
One of the key strengths of this solution is that none of the simulation executables are changed or recompiled. We do not require access to source code and the simulation logic remains exactly as originally certified.
To ensure continuity:
- The original computer hardware is removed as a full set
- It is kept intact and can be reconnected instantly if required
- No QTG re-mastering is typically needed, since the simulation code is untouched
This approach significantly reduces risk and keeps your regulatory position secure.
Optional Enhancements
Where appropriate, the upgrade can include:
- Replacement of older IOS monitors with modern touch-screen displays
- Improved operator usability and workflow
- Streamlined control of virtualised components
These enhancements further improve the training centre experience and modernise the user interface.
